In a world where the link between people and nature has become indisputable, supporting empowerment and concrete on-the-ground actions that work towards strengthening this connection is crucial. And so is sharing these people’s stories.

At the heart of the MAVA foundation is a strong story embodied by a single man driven by passion, Dr Luc Hoffmann. Established in 1994 to support the conservation of iconic sites such as the Camargue (France) and Doñana (Spain), MAVA has since grown into a professional, family-led, philanthropic foundation, becoming a key funder of global conservation.

MAVA's mission is to conserve biodiversity for the benefit of people and nature by financing, mobilising and strengthening its partners and the conservation community. But its role goes beyond just financing. The foundation seeks to catalyse change through empowering people and communities, shaping the conservation agenda and collaborating with fellow donors.

The foundation will soon be closing its doors, yet the story doesn’t end here. Securing a lasting impact of the funded projects, and enabling key partners to continue their work once MAVA has phased out of its funding in 2022, is a philosophy that shapes the foundation’s whole approach.
