LIFE is a European platform of small-scale fisher’s organisations (SSF) committed to fish in a low impact manner. LIFE’s mission is to provide a dedicated voice for SSF at EU level, to transform low impact small-scale fisheries into an attractive and economically viable profession, which sustains fish stocks and protects the marine environment, and contributes to prosperous coastal communities.

As part of a bigger project called “Scaling up co-managed and financially sustainable No-Take Zones in the Mediterranean”, together with other partners, LIFE’s work on the field is contributing to the MAVA expected strategy of “Proving effectiveness of MPAs and No-take zones” and expected result of “No-take zones established and enforced to reduce impact of fisheries on species, habitats and fish resources, by 2022”. For this, LIFE is working in the capacity building of the local community of small-scale fishers to become key actors of change for sustainable fisheries, by systematising their Traditional Ecological Knowledge, their agreed proposals for an improved and sustainable management of their fisheries and to bring their voice and co-responsibility in the co-management of the current Marine Protected Area of Cabo de Gata.
